Mass Oyster Project for Clean Water

The Massachusetts Oyster Project for Clean Water is an environmental non-profit (501 c-3) organization dedicated to restoring oysters to the estuaries of the Commonwealth.

An oyster can filter thirty gallons of water per day. The oysters filter out silt, phytoplankton and bacteria while removing nitrogen making for clear water that is healthier for other species of fish and plants including eelgrass.

The oysters provide a number of additional benefits including serving as a host for up to 200 additional species. Scientific studies have shown that ocean floors with oysters have three times the number of fish including prized stripers and blues.
